iTUNE IN
I saw three iTunes commercials on TV recently. Two of them were quite good, but the Eminem one is art. Gosh. Genius. I haven't really paid much attention to iTunes -- haven't even visited the website -- since I don't have a Macintosh, but I'm glad they're trying it out. Somebody has to come up with a workable solution to the music piracy problem, and whether or not iTunes is the solution, it's one of the first real steps in the right direction. There's a Boston Globe article on the site if you want more info.

DE FACTO COMPOSER LAUREATE
There's a good piece on John Adams at today's San Fransisco Chronicle which calls him "America's composer laureate".

WAR MUSIC
There's a decent article over at The American Prospect on the lack of antiwar music, but author Chaweon Koo leaves one song out of his discussion that is worth mentioning: Peacekeeper by Fleetwood Mac. Now it's perhaps not as blatant an antiwar song as he's looking for, but it's getting a lot of airplay, and it's actually a rather subtle political song. And it's really good.
One interesting thing about Peacekeeper is that it sounds to me like a more pacifist song than an Anit-Iraq-War song because of the word "peacekeeper." To me "Peacekeeper" is primarily a reference to UN peacekeepers, and if Fleetwood Mac feels the same way then we can assume that take the minority position against any form of UN peacekeeper action. It seems to me that most mainstream Democrats (I include myself here) and many mainstream Republicans feel that UN military action is legitimate whereas US unilateral action is not.
I did a totally unscientific survey to find out if other people feel the same way I do. I went to Google and found how many links they had to each of several phrases:
"UN Peacekeeper" 2160
"NATO Peacekeeper" 145
"US Peacekeeper" 797
"American Peacekeeper" 103
If the phrase "UN Peacekeeper" is so much more commonly used that the other obvious options, then I think we can assume that when most people hear "Peacekeeper" (the word or the song) they will think of UN peacekeepers. So I wish Fleetwood Mac's views lined up more with my own, but it's a terrific song and I won't complain too much.
